This March (2018), nine K-State Spanish students were inducted into Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Spanish Honors Society. The inductees included three graduate students, Alejandra González, Hannah Harker, and Logan Hoover; and six undergraduate Spanish majors, Angela Gearhardt, Emma Irvine, Sarah Marek, Tess Sharpe, Natalie Wolf, and Yepiao Yu. The ceremonial induction includes a symbolic candle-lighting from the “madre vela” (mother candle), the signing of the chapter register, and the distribution of certificates, pins, and red flowers.
The event was organized by Dr. Valentin-Rivera and attended by Spanish Faculty, current Sigma Delta Pi members, and friends and family of the inductees. Undergraduate Spanish major and Sigma Delta Pi member Alexandra Parr participated in the ceremonial induction of new members by reading a portion of the ceremony script, along with Professors Pablo Martinez-Diente, Maria Teresa DePaoli, and Lucia Garavito. After the Spanish language ceremony, everyone enjoyed a bilingual lunch with family, friends, faculty, and current Sigma Delta Pi members and K-State Spanish students.
Members of Sigma Delta Pi are eligible for study abroad scholarships through the organization, graduate students have the opportunity to apply for research grants, and both graduate and undergraduate students may participate in panels organized by Sigma Delta Pi at national conferences. At Kansas State, the chapter organizes 1-2 events each semester, and last Fall’s Poetry Reading and Día de los Muertos máscara competition were a lot of fun for both group members and K-State Spanish students. Sigma Delta Pi officers at K-State are pictured below with Prof. Valentin-Rivera – they are, from left to right: Catherine Campbell, President; Casey Thompson, Secretary; and Melissa Huerter, Vice-President. Casey and Melissa graduated in Fall of 2017 (¡Felicitaciones!) and new elections will be held this Spring.
